About Liquid Living

Liquid Living: June 11-18 2007 online and on BBC Radio 3 later ...

(Radio 3 have linked to this static ‘about’ page. ‘Liquid Living’ itself, documenting the project, is here ...)

Liquid Living is a week-long online and physical project from June 11 2007, which will turn into a radio show for BBC Radio 3 broadcast on November 4 2007 presented by me: Paul Bennun.

The project is an exploration of virtual communities from a historical and social perspective, from the earliest mail distribution list and bulletin board to Facebook and cutting-edge 3D worlds. It’s also -- unfortunately for me -- a psychological study exploring what will happen to me as I’m locked in my flat on top of a block in Hackney for 7 days, living my life entirely over the network. During this period I’m conducting all my normal business and social life via online tools, and interviewing a number of luminaries including authors and pioneers of virtual communities -- sometimes in public spaces where an active audience is welcome. My last interview is planned to be with a psychologist, which I suspect I’m going to need.

Anyone is welcome to contribute or just keep me company. This link contains details of where to find me; there’s a blow-by-blow account of the process on my diary.

The radio programme is being produced for Radio 3 by Joby Waldman from Somethin’ Else’s Sound department.

This website documents the process, and is knocked together by me. It’s not officially sanctioned by the BBC, Somethin’ Else or anyone else, and any opinions expressed on it are my own.
